Structure Fire in the Abandoned Castle on Croton Dam Road
April 18, 2022

At 11:45 last night, Millwood FD was dispatched to a reported structure fire on Croton Dam Road (Route 134) with automatic mutual aid from Croton-on-Hudson FD's Tanker 10 and the Ossining FD FASTeam. All 3 Millwood chiefs immediately responded and searched the area due to the unknown exact location of the fire. Car 2251 (Chief Raguso) found a structure fire in a castle-like structure set well back from the road, with fire spanning multiple floors. After cutting a lock to access the long-abandoned castle property, all units on scene and responding were requested to stage, as our Mini-Attack 10 was the only unit able to access the largely overgrown driveway with numerous downed trees. Due to the lack of hydrants in the area, Bedford Hills FD Tanker 5 was also requested to the scene. MA10 stretched its 5-inch supply line down the driveway to be fed by the tankers on scene. Millwood Tanker 15 was positioned as the "nurse" tanker, sending water directly up to MA10 through the 5-inch line to support suppression efforts, while Tankers 5 and 10 were used to supply Tanker 15. Millwood, Croton, and Bedford Hills members stretched 3 lines and worked on extinguishing the fire for nearly 2 hours, while also determining that all searches for people inside the structure were negative. A blitz nozzle was deployed during the operation to help soak the interior of the structure. Meanwhile, Briarcliff Manor FD Engine 93 relocated to our Station 1 and Pocantico Hills FD Tanker 12 to our Station 2. Later in the incident, the Westchester County Cause & Origin Team, Westchester County PD Arson Investigation Team, and New Castle Building Department were requested. After 3.5 hours of hard work, all members and apparatus were back in service at around 3am.

Thank you to all of our mutual aid partners for assisting at this challenging incident!
