Another Busy Weekend for the Millwood FD Volunteers!

August 16, 2022

Beginning on Friday just past 2pm, Millwood FD Tanker 15 and Mini-Attack 10 were requested mutual aid to assist Yorktown FD at a large area brush fire in the Yeshiva complex. Car 2252 (Chief Rodrigues), Tanker 15, and Mini-Attack 10 responded with a crew of 10 moments after dispatch. Due to the challenging location of the fire, Tanker 15 was used to shuttle water from the fill site at Millwood FD Station 2 to the scene. Members from both departments worked on difficult, uneven terrain to stop the rapidly expanding fire from growing closer to the Taconic State Parkway. As the scene was declared under control, another brush fire flared up on the other side of the complex. Mini-Attack 10 and Yorktown FD's Utility 253 (UTV) responded with manpower to quickly extinguish that fire before it grew. Millwood units operated on scene for 4 hours to get control of the fires.

While units were operating at the Yorktown brush fire, just past 5pm, we were dispatched with 36Medic1 and Ossining VAC to a reported motor vehicle accident, with a vehicle down the embankment on Route 100. Car 2251 (Chief Raguso), 2253 (Chief McCarthy), Engine 248, and Rescue 36 responded and found a van had left the roadway and rolled over, with both occupants out of the vehicle on arrival. Millwood members assisted with traffic control and hazard mitigation, while OVAC transported the 2 patients. Units remained on scene for about an hour and a half

About 20 minutes after the MVA dispatch, Millwood FD was dispatched to an additional call for an odor of gas on Route 100 near the shopping center. Car 2253 left the scene of the MVA to respond, along with Ladder 52 and Mini-Attack 10, who had just been released from the Yorktown brush fire. Units investigated the cause of the odor and found it to be an issue with the washer/dryer in an apartment. Units returned to service within 30 minutes.

Saturday morning started early for the Millwood FD volunteers, with a mutual aid request from Peekskill FD for Rescue 36 to serve as the cascade unit at a structure fire in their district just after 6am. Car 2251, 2252, 2253, and Rescue 36 responded moments after dispatch and assisted on scene by filling empty air bottles. Units remained on scene for under an hour before returning to service.

On Saturday night just after 10pm, we were dispatched with an engine from Briarcliff Manor FD to a reported shed fire on Pinesbridge Road. Due to the unknown circumstances prior to arrival, Car 2251 requested an additional engine from Yorktown Heights Volunteer FD to the scene as well. As the Millwood Chiefs arrived on scene, they reported a bonfire in the front yard in close proximity to the house and cancelled the Yorktown FD engine. Engine 248 arrived and took position on the grass in front of the house. Members on Engine 248 stretched the trash line and extinguished the fire, while members from Ladder 52 and Rescue 36 pulled the wood apart to expose any embers still burning. Upon the arrival of Briarcliff FD Engine 94, a secondary line was stretched to complete overhaul. Units were back in service in just over an hour.
