Mutual Aid Structure Fire and Training

March 22, 2024

At 1:45 yesterday afternoon, Millwood FD Rescue 36 was requested to respond mutual aid to serve as the cascade unit at a working structure fire in Buchanan FD's district. Upon arrival, the crew of Rescue 36 and Car 2253 (Chief Santone) split into 2 groups, 1 dedicated to filling the air bottles of mutual aid crews who were in the structure and the other went into the attic of the structure to open the walls to expose hotspots. Millwood FD worked with members from Buchanan FD, Montrose FD, Croton-on-Hudson FD Continental Village FD, and Montrose VA to extinguish the fire. The interior team faced the challenges of a tight working area in the attic with unstable floors, and worked closely with members of the Verplanck FD, who were cutting the roof above them. Millwood units were returned to service just over 2 hours later.

Later in the day, Car 2252 (Chief McCarthy) and a crew on Engine 248 traveled down to the WCDES Fire Training Center to practice a multitude of fireground duties with Chappaqua FD and Purchase FD. Members had the opportunity to operate in live fire scenarios, working on techniques for stretching hoselines, forcing doors, laddering the building, and conducting searches in a smoke-filled environment.
