The Millwood Fire District: Administration & Oversight
The Fire District
The Fire District is a separate and independent government body responsible for levying taxes on Chappaqua, NY, Millwood, NY, and Ossining, NY residents addresses within the Fire District boundary. The Millwood Fire Company, as a recognized 501c3 nonprofit, does not have the authority to levy or collect taxes. The Millwood Fire District and Millwood Fire Company rely on each other to fulfill our respective obligations to always advocate for and protect the residents we serve.
The Board of Fire Commissioners
The District is governed by a five-member Board of Fire Commissioners.
- Terms: Each Commissioner serves a five-year term.
- Elections: One seat is up for election every December.
- Your Vote Matters: Any registered voter living within the Millwood Fire District is encouraged to vote in these annual elections.
What the District Does
Governed by New York State regulations, the Commissioners manage the "business" side of fire protection, including:
- Setting the annual budget and fire tax rates.
- Approving vehicle and equipment purchases.
- Maintaining the firehouses and district buildings.
- Approving Fire Company elections.

Millwood Fire Company #1: Our Volunteer Heroes
While the District provides the tools, Millwood Fire Company #1 provides the people. The Fire Company is a separate, all-volunteer organization that delivers firefighting and rescue services to 1,800 families across Millwood, Chappaqua, and the West End of the Town of New Castle.
- Service Area: Our volunteers protect your homes and businesses 24/7 and provide mutual aid to neighboring towns when called upon.
- The Partnership: The Board of Fire Commissioners provides the necessary resources, and in return, our volunteers provide the skill and bravery needed to protect life and property.
- Community Impact: By volunteering their time and risking their lives, these dedicated neighbors save taxpayers millions of dollars annually in salary and benefit costs.
Two Organizations, One Mission
The relationship between the District and the Company is built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to the residents of Millwood. Together, they ensure that when you call for help, the best equipment and the best people are ready to respond.
