Junior Firefighter

A program for teens (ages 14–16) to learn the ropes and prepare for a future in emergency services. Learn more about our Junior Program.

Associate Member

Help with the vital administrative, event planning, and logistical tasks that keep our department running. No emergency response required.

Safety Note for New Members

New members who have not yet completed Firefighter 1 training are restricted from using heavy equipment. Those who have completed fire ground safety may ride apparatus but cannot act as interior attack firefighters until fully certified.

Volunteer FAQ

Joining the Millwood Fire Company is a rewarding commitment. Here are answers to the most common questions from prospective members.

The time commitment varies depending on your role. Generally, once voted in, you can participate in in-house training drills on Tuesday nights (usually 2–3 hours) and attend monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of every month—with a delicious dinner served after!

The average Millwood firefighter dedicates around 70–80 hours per year, distributed roughly as:

  1. Tuesday training: 24 hours/year required
  2. Monthly meetings: 12 hours/year required
  3. Responding to calls: 15% of calls ≈ 36 hours/year
  4. Community Events: Variable—every hour counts

Not at all. We provide all necessary training for free. New interior firefighters attend the Westchester County Fire Academy, while support members receive specialized on-site training. If you have the heart to serve, we’ll provide the skills.

Safety is our absolute priority. Through rigorous training, high-quality personal protective equipment (PPE), and strict “buddy system” protocols, we manage the risks inherent in emergency services. You will never be asked to perform a task you haven’t been trained for.

Absolutely! We welcome everyone to the Fire Company and are proud to have some great female members. The Millwood Fire Company is open to all qualified men and women.

No. Our members respond from home and drive to one of our fire stations when dispatched. The 2 a.m. calls are tough, but our community is counting on us.

When bad weather is forecast, a “standby” may be issued, asking members to stay at one of our stations for a period of time to be ready to respond.

No one is “on call.” We know you’re busy—respond to emergencies whenever it best fits your schedule. Members are required to respond to 15% of total annual calls, amounting to approximately 36 hours per year.

We need you! Fire scenes require drivers, pump operators, and scene support. Additionally, our Associate Membership is perfect for those who want to help with community events, fundraising, or administrative tasks without responding to emergency calls.

  • Junior Members: Ages 14–16. See our Junior Firefighter Program.
  • Active Firefighters: Age 16 and up.
  • There is no maximum age—if you are healthy and motivated, there is a role for you.

Nothing - Millwood Fire provides all necessary gear, custom fit for you and your role. Millwood Fire is dedicated to our members' long term safety and well being and we invest up to $20,000 per firefighter every 5 years. Our members must not be required to tradeoff between safety and personal finances.

Ready to Serve Your Community?

The Millwood Fire Company is proud to serve you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, operating out of two stations staffed entirely by dedicated volunteers who live and work right here in the community.

Take the first step today—there’s never been a better time to join our family.
