Protecting Our Neighbors: Fire Suppression Services
At the Millwood Fire Company, our primary
mission is the protection of life and property within the Millwood Fire District.
While we have grown into a multi-faceted emergency response agency since our
founding in 1924, firefighting remains the cornerstone of our
service to the community.

Operating out of two strategically located stations (Station 1 on Route 120 and
Station 2 on Route 134), our 100% volunteer
force stands ready 24/7 to respond to over 400 alarms annually. Our fire
suppression capabilities are built on a foundation of rigorous training and
state-of-the-art equipment designed to handle the diverse challenges of our
district—from residential structure fires and commercial developments to brush fires
and vehicle fires on the Taconic State Parkway.
Our Firefighting Arsenal
To ensure the highest level of protection, we maintain a versatile fleet of apparatus:
- Engines 247 & 248: Our primary attack
pieces, equipped with high-capacity pumps and specialized foam systems for
rapid knockdown.
- Ladder 52: A 75-foot aerial quint
providing critical vertical reach, ventilation support, and elevated master
streams.
- Tanker 15: Carrying over 3,000 gallons
of water, this unit is vital for fire suppression in areas of our district
without municipal hydrants.
- Rescue 36 & Mini-Attack 10: Specialized
units that provide fire suppression support and access to tight,
difficult-to-reach locations.
For over a century, the Millwood Fire Company has been "Neighbors Helping
Neighbors." Our members are your friends and coworkers, professionally trained and
deeply committed to ensuring that when the alarm sounds, Millwood is safe.
Beyond the Flame: Comprehensive Rescue Services
While fire suppression is our foundation, the Millwood Fire Company provides a
sophisticated array of technical rescue services. In an increasingly complex world,
our district faces more than just the threat of fire—from high-speed accidents on
the Taconic State Parkway to technical mishaps in our residential and commercial
zones. When a life is pinned, trapped, or in a precarious position, our specialized
Rescue Squad is trained to intervene.

Our rescue operations are centered around Rescue
36, a "rolling toolbox" equipped with the most advanced life-saving
technology available. Our members undergo hundreds of hours of specialized training
to ensure that when seconds count, we have the expertise to stabilize the scene and
extricate victims safely.
Our Specialized Rescue Capabilities
- Motor Vehicle
Extrication: We utilize "The Jaws of Life"—high-powered
hydraulic spreaders, cutters, and rams—to quickly and safely remove victims
from crushed or overturned vehicles.
- Technical
Stabilization: Using advanced cribbing, Partech struts, and
high-pressure lifting bags, we can stabilize heavy machinery or vehicles to
prevent further injury during a rescue.
- Elevator & Industrial
Rescue: Our technicians are trained to handle mechanical
entrapments in commercial settings, ensuring a calm, professional response
to technical malfunctions.
At Millwood, "Rescue" is a promise. It is a commitment to providing the highest
level of emergency care and technical skill to our neighbors, regardless of the
situation. We don't just put the fire out—we get you out.
Rapid Response: Surface and Ice Water Rescue
Water emergencies require a specialized blend of speed, specialized equipment, and
technical expertise. The Millwood Fire Company protects a district with diverse
aquatic risks, from private residential pools and local ponds to the expansive
reservoirs and waterways that border our community. Whether it's a summer
recreational accident or a winter ice-related emergency, our members are trained to
execute rapid-entry surface rescues.
Learn more about our training and how you can help by visiting the About Our Department page or the membership section.
Our water rescue operations are highly mobile, utilizing specialized marine units
that can be deployed quickly to any body of water in the district.
Marine & Technical Water Gear
We maintain a fleet of nimble, inflatable rescue craft designed for versatility and
shallow-water access:
- Marine Unit 1: A 14’
Mercury inflatable boat powered by a 25 HP Jet Drive outboard engine,
allowing for high-speed response without the risk of an exposed
propeller.
- Marine Unit 2: A 10’
Avon inflatable, ideal for manual deployment in tight or difficult-to-access
locations.
- Surface Rescue Kits:
Housed on Rescue 36, these kits include high-visibility cold-water dry
suits, specialized personal flotation devices (PFDs), and throw-bag
systems.
- Ice Rescue Sleds:
During the winter months, we utilize specialized sleds and "murdock" suits
to safely navigate unstable ice and perform life-saving extractions.
Specialized Training
Water rescue isn't just about the gear; it's about the tactics. Our members
participate in regular drills covering victim stabilization, shore-based rope
hauling, and "Go" rescue techniques. By maintaining these skills, we ensure that
when a "person in the water" call comes in, the Millwood Fire Company is ready to
act immediately.
From the first signs of trouble to a successful recovery on the shore, we are
committed to keeping our community safe—on land and on the water.
Always Ready: Community Service & Hazard Calls
At the Millwood Fire Company, our commitment
to the Millwood Fire District extends far
beyond firefighting and technical rescue. A significant portion of our 400+ annual
responses are "Service Calls"—incidents where our specialized equipment and
expertise are needed to mitigate hazards, ensure public safety, and assist our
neighbors with non-fire emergencies.
For non-emergencies or to request assistance, check our contact page or learn how to join our volunteer ranks.
Whether it’s a storm-related hazard or a malfunctioning appliance, we are your 24/7
resource for peace of mind.
Common Service & Hazard Responses
Our team is equipped to handle a wide range of community needs, including:
- Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Investigations: CO is a "silent killer." We use sensitive
metering equipment to locate the source of carbon monoxide or gas leaks,
ensuring your home is safe before you re-enter.
- Hazardous Condition
Mitigation: From downed power lines and arcing transformers
during Westchester storms to fuel spills on the Taconic, we secure the area
to protect pedestrians and motorists.
- Severe Weather
Standbys: During hurricanes or blizzards, our volunteers staff
both Station 1 and Station 2 around the clock, ensuring rapid response times
when roads are treacherous.
- Water & Pumping
Assistance: In cases of significant basement flooding or broken
water mains that threaten property, we assist with water removal and hazard
stabilization.
- Alarm Activations: We
respond to every fire and smoke alarm as a "true emergency" until proven
otherwise, conducting thorough thermal imaging checks to rule out hidden
fires.
Mutual Aid & Community Support
We take pride in our "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" philosophy. Millwood frequently
provides Mutual Aid to surrounding departments like Chappaqua,
Ossining, and Briarcliff Manor, and we host community events such as blood drives,
fire prevention seminars, and our annual holiday parade.
Safety Note: For all emergencies—including carbon monoxide
alarms—always dial 911.
Associates & Auxiliary
While our firefighters and rescue technicians are on the front lines, the Millwood Fire Company #1 Auxiliary serves
as the vital backbone of our organization. Formed in 1935, the Auxiliary is a
dedicated group of members who ensure that our volunteers are supported, our
community is engaged, and our department has the supplemental resources needed to
excel.
If you're interested in volunteering with the Auxiliary or learning more, visit our
membership information page.
The Associates & Auxiliary’s mission is simple but essential: to support the active firefighters
and enhance the safety and spirit of the Millwood community.
Supporting Our Mission
The Associates & Auxiliary provide critical logistical and financial support through three main
pillars:
- Fundraising & Equipment
Support: Through annual events, merchandise sales (like our
popular 100th-anniversary gear), and raffles, the Auxiliary raises funds
that go directly back into the department. These contributions help purchase
specialized equipment, support member retention programs, and maintain our
historic firehouses.
- Community Outreach &
Events: The Auxiliary is the face of our community connection.
They spearhead beloved local traditions, including the Annual Open House,
holiday parades, and educational visits for local Cub Scout troops and
school groups. These events help bridge the gap between our first responders
and the neighbors we serve.
- Logistical Assistance:
During large-scale emergencies or prolonged "standbys" during severe
weather, the Auxiliary provides much-needed "rehab" support—ensuring our
firefighters are fed, hydrated, and ready to return to the line.
Join the Associates & Auxiliary
You don't have to wear a helmet to make a difference in Millwood. The Associates & Auxiliary
offer a meaningful way for residents to volunteer their time through event
planning, administrative support, and community advocacy. Whether you’re a lifelong
resident or new to the hamlet, your skills can help keep our department strong.
"The Associates & Auxiliary has been an inseparable part of Millwood Fire history for
nearly 90 years. Their dedication ensures that when our members are called to duty,
they have the full support of the community behind them."
